Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water

Directions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the onion and garlic and cook until the onion is softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the ground beef and cook until no longer pink, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the cumin, oregano, paprika, coriander, black pepper and cayenne pepper (if using) and cook for 1 minute.
  5. Stir in the tomato sauce and water and bring to a simmer.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened, about 10 minutes.
  7. Serve over cooked rice or with tortillas.
