Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 2/3 cup warm milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, warm milk, and eggs.
  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for 1 hour.
  6. Divide the dough into two equal portions and form each into a long, thin braid.
  7. Place the braids on a greased baking sheet and let rise for 30 minutes.
  8. Brush the braid with the beaten egg yolk and bake at 350°F for 25 minutes.
  9. Remove the bread from the oven and let cool before serving.
