This traditional Welsh Rabbit recipe, also known as Welsh Rarebit, is a classic English dish that is perfect for a cozy dinner or lunch. Made with simple ingredients like cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and bread, this dish is a flavor-packed treat. The cheese sauce has a rich, tangy flavor that pairs perfectly with the toasted bread. Serve it as a main dish or as an appetizer, and enjoy the comforting taste of Welsh Rabbit.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread
  • 250g cheddar cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 cup milk

Directions

  1. Preheat the broiler on your oven.
  2. Toast the bread slices until they are golden brown on both sides.
  3. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  4. Add the flour to the melted butter and whisk until it forms a smooth paste.
  5. Slowly add the milk, whisking continuously to avoid any lumps.
  6. Stir in the grated cheddar cheese until it melts and the sauce becomes smooth.
  7. Add the Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, black pepper, and paprika to the cheese sauce. Stir well to combine.
  8. Place the toasted bread slices on a baking sheet and evenly spread the cheese sauce on top of each slice.
  9. Place the baking sheet under the broiler and cook until the cheese sauce is bubbly and slightly browned on top.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
  11. Serve the Welsh Rabbit warm as a main dish or cut into smaller pieces as an appetizer.
