Ingredients

  • 2 lbs chicken, cut into pieces
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced

  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon red chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tablespoons oil

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until golden brown and caramelized.
  2. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, mix together the minced garlic, grated ginger, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala, and salt.
  3. Add the spice mixture to the caramelized onions and cook for a minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the chicken pieces to the pan and cook until browned on all sides.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and green chilies to the pan and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the tomatoes are soft.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and add yogurt to the pan. Stir well to coat the chicken and onions with the yogurt mixture.
  7. Cover the pan and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
  8. Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
