In a large bowl, cream together butter and 1 cup of sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt. Gradually stir dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until combined.
Roll dough into 1-inch balls and roll in remaining 1/2 cup of sugar. Place on prepared baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes, until lightly golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Sprinkle with ground nutmeg before serving.
