Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup bacon grease or butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Directions

  1. In a large pot, melt the bacon grease or butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the flour and whisk to combine with the fat. Cook for 1 minute, whisking constantly.
  3. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper and whisk to combine. Cook for 1 minute, whisking constantly.
  4. Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly to combine. Cook for 3 minutes, whisking constantly.
  5. Add the chicken broth and whisk to combine. Cook for 5 minutes, whisking constantly.
  6. Add the canned crushed tomatoes and whisk to combine. Cook for 10 minutes, whisking constantly.
  7. Add the sugar and whisk to combine. Cook for 1 minute, whisking constantly.
  8. Serve hot over biscuits, fried chicken, or on its own!
