Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  4. Gradually beat in the dry ingredients, then stir in the applesauce and walnuts (if using).
  5. Spread batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  7. Cool before serving.
