Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pan. Cook until the onion is softened and the garlic is fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste to the pan. Stir well to combine.
  4. Sprinkle in the red pepper flakes, dried oregano, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Stir again to incorporate the spices.
  5. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pan. Let the sauce cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Remove the lid and taste the sauce. Adjust the seasonings if needed.
  7. Stir in the chopped fresh basil and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
