  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar


  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the molasses and eggs and mix until combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
  6. Scoop the dough into 1 ½ tablespoon-sized balls and roll in the granulated sugar.
  7. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.
  8. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
