Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, for garnish

Directions

  1. Cut the tofu into small cubes and pat dry with a paper towel. Toss the tofu cubes with cornstarch until coated.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook until golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the bell peppers and onion, and cook for 2-3 minutes, until slightly softened.
  4. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet, and cook for an additional 1 minute.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the orange juice, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, orange zest, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  6. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the vegetables. Stir well to combine.
  7. Return the tofu to the skillet and toss to coat it in the sauce. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, until the tofu is heated through.
  8. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
