Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, ground ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the molasses, egg, and salt. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
Roll the dough into walnut sized balls, and place them 2 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets. Flatten each cookie with the bottom of a glass.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
