These soft and fluffy hot cross buns are a perfect treat for Easter or any time of the year. Made with a hint of spice, dried fruits, and a sweet glaze, these buns are sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm milk
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup raisins or currants
- 1/4 cup candied citrus peel
- 1/4 cup flour for the cross
- 1/4 cup water for the glaze
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar for the glaze
Directions
- In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Stir to form a dough.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
- Punch down the dough and knead in the raisins and citrus peel. Divide into 12 pieces and shape into buns. Place on a baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Mix 1/4 cup flour with enough water to form a paste. Pipe crosses on top of the buns. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Mix 1/4 cup powdered sugar with enough water to make a thick glaze. Brush on top of the buns while still warm. Serve and enjoy!
