Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Pink or red food coloring (optional)
  • Valentine's Day sprinkles (optional)

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until well combined.
  5. If desired, add a few drops of pink or red food coloring to the dough and mix until evenly colored.
  6. Divide the dough into two equal parts and shape each into a disk. Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. Working with one disk of dough at a time, roll out on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  9. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and transfer them to the prepared baking sheets, leaving some space between each cookie.
  10. Gently press Valentine's Day sprinkles onto the cookies, if desired.
  11. Bake for 9-11 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown.
  12. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
  13. Repeat the rolling and cutting process with the remaining dough, gathering any scraps and re-rolling as needed.
  14. Once cooled, decorate the cookies with icing in various shades of pink, red, and white. Get creative with designs and patterns!
