Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
- 2 cans (28 ounces each) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
- 1 cup red wine
- 2 tablespoons dried basil
- 2 tablespoons dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
Directions
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion becomes translucent.
- Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Cook until browned, breaking it up into smaller pieces with a wooden spoon.
- Once the meat is cooked, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and red wine. Stir to combine.
- Add the dried basil, dried oregano, sugar, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes (if using), and bay leaf. Give it a good stir.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer the sauce, uncovered, for at least 30 minutes, but preferably 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Before serving, remove the bay leaf and stir in the fresh parsley.
