Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 2 tablespoons dried basil
  • 2 tablespoons dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Directions

  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion becomes translucent.
  2. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Cook until browned, breaking it up into smaller pieces with a wooden spoon.

  4. Add the dried basil, dried oregano, sugar, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes (if using), and bay leaf. Give it a good stir.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and simmer the sauce, uncovered, for at least 30 minutes, but preferably 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  6. Before serving, remove the bay leaf and stir in the fresh parsley.
  7. Serve the sauce over your favorite cooked pasta and enjoy!
