Ingredients

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 cups day-old bread, cubed
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pan.
  3. Add the diced onion, green and red bell peppers, and minced garlic to the skillet with the drippings. Cook until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
  4. In the greased baking dish, layer half of the cubed bread followed by half of the cooked sausage, cooked vegetables, and shredded cheddar cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
  5. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, black pepper, dried thyme, and dried oregano. Pour the egg mixture over the layered ingredients in the baking dish.
  6. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or overnight for the best results.
  7. Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the eggs are set.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Slice into squares and serve hot.
  9. Enjoy this delicious American breakfast casserole with your favorite hot sauce or ketchup.
