Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Assorted food coloring
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4-6 tablespoons heavy cream
  • Edible flowers for decoration

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Alternate adding the flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly into three bowls. Add a few drops of different food coloring to each bowl and stir until the desired color is achieved.
  6. Pour the colored batters into the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. In a mixing bowl, beat together powdered sugar, softened butter, vanilla extract, and heavy cream until smooth and creamy.
  10. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting on top. Repeat with the remaining two layers, stacking them on top of each other.
  11. Using a piping bag fitted with a star tip, pipe frosting around the edges of the cake to create a fence-like border.
  12. Decorate the top of the cake with edible flowers, arranging them to resemble a beautiful flower garden.
  13. Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the frosting to set.
  14. Slice and serve the Flower Garden Cake, marveling at its beauty and enjoying every delicious bite.
