Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour one 9-inch round cake pan.
In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and white sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; stir into the creamed mixture alternately with the milk and strong brewed coffee. Fold in the walnuts. Pour batter into prepared pan.
In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, walnuts, and melted butter. Sprinkle over the top of the cake batter.
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool before serving.
