Try making these authentic Forfar Bridies at home with this easy-to-follow recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and use your fingertips to rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  2. Gradually add the water and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface until it becomes smooth. Wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until it becomes translucent and soft.
  4. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until fully browned. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to a thickness of approximately 1/8 inch. Cut out circles of about 6 inches in diameter.
  7. Place a spoonful of the cooled beef mixture onto one half of each dough circle. Fold the other half over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges together to seal, and then crimp the edges with a fork.
  8. Transfer the bridies to the prepared baking tray. Brush the tops with beaten egg wash.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the bridies are golden brown and crisp.
  10. Remove from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy these delectable Forfar Bridies!
