Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • Coarse sea salt for topping

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt until combined.
  2. Add the melted butter and warm water and mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 to 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Grease a baking sheet, or line with parchment paper.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a log, and twist into a pretzel shape.
  7. In a large pot, bring the baking soda and 4 cups of water to a boil. Drop the pretzels into the boiling water, one at a time, for 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush the pretzels with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  9. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool before serving.
