Ingredients
- 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- Coarse sea salt for topping
Directions
- In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt until combined.
- Add the melted butter and warm water and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 to 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Grease a baking sheet, or line with parchment paper.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a log, and twist into a pretzel shape.
- In a large pot, bring the baking soda and 4 cups of water to a boil. Drop the pretzels into the boiling water, one at a time, for 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the pretzels with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let cool before serving.
