In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla and mashed banana. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt; stir into the banana mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Fold in the crushed pineapple, walnuts, and cherries. Spread the mixture into the prepared pan.
Bake in preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.
To make the frosting, cream together the butter and confectioners' sugar in a medium bowl. Stir in the crushed pineapple and vanilla extract until smooth. Spread over the cooled cake.
