This homemade recipe will transport you to the streets of Mexico with every sip. Perfect for cold winter nights or any time you crave a comforting and indulgent drink. Enjoy it with some pan dulce for a truly authentic experience.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup masa harina (corn flour)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 tablet Mexican chocolate (such as Abuelita or Ibarra)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar (or more, to taste)

Directions

  1. In a saucepan, bring the water to a gentle boil.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the masa harina and 1 cup of milk until well combined and no lumps remain.
  3. Slowly pour the masa mixture into the boiling water, stirring constantly with a whisk or wooden spoon.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and add the evaporated milk, Mexican chocolate, cinnamon stick, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt.
  5. Stir the mixture continuously until the chocolate melts and the mixture thickens, about 20 minutes.
  6. Add the remaining cup of milk and sugar, and continue stirring until well combined and heated through.
  7. Remove the cinnamon stick and serve the Champurrado hot in mugs.
  8. Garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, if desired.
  9. Serve with pan dulce or Mexican sweet bread for an authentic touch.
