Ingredients

  • For the dough:
  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • For the sauce:
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • For the toppings:
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup sliced pepperoni
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup sliced black olives
  • 1/4 cup sliced green bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup sliced red onion

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, sugar, and instant yeast.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together the water and melted butter.
  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. While the dough is rising, preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  7. In a medium saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes, basil, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and transfer it to a greased 9-inch deep dish pizza pan. Press the dough evenly into the pan, covering the bottom and sides.
  9. Layer half of the shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the dough.
  10. Spread half of the sauce over the cheese.
  11. Layer the pepperoni, Parmesan cheese, black olives, bell pepper, and red onion over the sauce.
  12. Top with the remaining mozzarella cheese and sauce.
  13. Cover the pizza loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  14. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  15. Let the pizza cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
