Ingredients
- For the dough:
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- For the sauce:
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- For the toppings:
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup sliced pepperoni
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives
- 1/4 cup sliced green bell pepper
- 1/4 cup sliced red onion
Directions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, sugar, and instant yeast.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the water and melted butter.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- While the dough is rising, preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a medium saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes, basil, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and transfer it to a greased 9-inch deep dish pizza pan. Press the dough evenly into the pan, covering the bottom and sides.
- Layer half of the shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the dough.
- Spread half of the sauce over the cheese.
- Layer the pepperoni, Parmesan cheese, black olives, bell pepper, and red onion over the sauce.
- Top with the remaining mozzarella cheese and sauce.
- Cover the pizza loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
- Let the pizza cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
