This recipe is perfect for game day gatherings, cookouts, or any time you're craving a taste of the Midwest.

Ingredients

  • 6 bratwurst sausages
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 cup beer (preferably an amber or craft beer)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 brat buns
  • Mustard, for serving
  • Sauerkraut, for serving (optional)

Directions

  1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook until caramelized, about 10 minutes.
  2. In a slow cooker, combine the caramelized onions, beer, beef broth, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Add the bratwurst sausages to the slow cooker and ensure they are fully submerged in the liquid.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low heat for 4-6 hours or until the bratwursts are cooked through and tender.
  5. Once the bratwursts are cooked, preheat your grill or broiler.
  6. Remove the bratwursts from the slow cooker and transfer them to the grill or broiler. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side or until nicely browned.
  7. While the bratwursts are grilling, strain the cooking liquid from the slow cooker and reserve it for dipping or serving as a sauce.
  8. Serve the grilled bratwursts on brat buns with mustard and sauerkraut, if desired. Enjoy!
