Ingredients

  • 2 pounds pork shoulder or pork tenderloin
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, Chinese rice wine or dry sherry, minced garlic, five-spice powder, red food coloring (optional), sesame oil, and vegetable oil.
  2. Place the pork shoulder or pork tenderloin in a large resealable plastic bag. Pour the marinade over the pork, seal the bag, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Remove the pork from the marinade, reserving the marinade.
  5. Place the pork on a wire rack set inside a baking dish. Roast in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  6. While the pork is roasting, transfer the reserved marinade to a small saucepan. Simmer over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce thickens slightly.
  7. After 30 minutes of roasting, brush the pork with the thickened marinade. Return the pork to the oven and roast for another 15 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 145°F (63°C).
  8. Remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Slice the pork into thin pieces and serve hot.
