Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the vanilla. Stir in the flour and salt until well blended. The mixture will be crumbly.
Press half of the dough into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spread the fig jam evenly over the crust.
Crumble the remaining dough over the top of the fig jam. Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown.
Allow to cool before serving.
