Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 4 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten (for egg wash)

Directions

  1. Add warm water, vegetable oil, eggs, sugar, salt, bread flour, and active dry yeast to the bread machine pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer.
  2. Select the dough cycle and start the machine.
  3. Once the dough cycle is complete, remove the dough from the machine and place it on a floured surface.
  4. Divide the dough into three equal parts.
  5. With each part, roll it into a rope about 16 inches long.
  6. Place the three ropes next to each other and pinch them together at one end.
  7. Braid the ropes together, crossing the left rope over the center, then the right rope over the new center, repeating until you reach the end of the ropes.
  8. Pinch the ends together and tuck them under the loaf.
  9. Place the braided loaf on a greased baking sheet or a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  10. Cover the loaf with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  11. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  12. Brush the top of the loaf with the beaten egg yolk.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the challah turns golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  14. Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
