Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu, drained and cubed
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)

Directions

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture. Cut it into cubes and toss them with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch until evenly coated.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and fry them until golden brown and crispy. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the sliced bell peppers and onion. Cook them for a few minutes until they start to soften.
  4. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the orange juice, soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, and orange zest. Pour the mixture into the skillet with the vegetables.
  6. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for a couple of minutes.
  7. Stir in the cornstarch-water mixture to thicken the sauce.
  8. Return the tofu to the skillet and toss it with the sauce and vegetables. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.
  9. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  10. Garnish with sesame seeds, if desired.
  11. Serve the Tofu Orange hot with steamed rice or noodles.
