Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried chickpeas, soaked overnight
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped for garnish

Directions

  1. Rinse the soaked chickpeas and set aside.
  2. Select the 'Saute' function on the Instant Pot and heat oil.
  3. Add cumin seeds and allow them to sizzle.
  4. Add chopped onions, minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chilies. Saute until onions turn golden brown.
  5. Add ground coriander, ground cumin, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Saute for a minute to roast the spices.
  6. Add the pureed tomatoes, tomato paste, and salt. Mix well.
  7. Add the soaked chickpeas and water. Stir to combine everything.
  8. Close the Instant Pot lid and set the valve to 'Sealing' position.
  9. Select the 'Pressure Cook' function and set the timer for 30 minutes on high pressure.
  10. Once the cooking time is complete, allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes, then carefully quick release the remaining pressure.
  11. Open the Instant Pot lid and give the chana masala a good stir.
  12. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
  13. Serve hot with naan bread or steamed rice.
