- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup white sugar

Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
- In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and 1 cup sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; stir into the creamed mixture.
- Roll dough into 1 inch balls, and roll them in the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar. Place 2 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until light and golden.
- Let cookies cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
