Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 5-6 tablespoons ice water
  • 2 cups peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the shortening using a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Form the dough into a ball and divide it in half.
  3. Roll out one half of the dough on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Transfer the dough to the pie plate and trim the excess.
  4. In another bowl, combine the apples, cranberries, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Mix well until the fruit is evenly coated.
  5. Pour the fruit mixture into the pie crust. Dot the top with butter.
  6. Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the filling. Trim, seal, and flute the edges. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  7. Brush the top crust with beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.
  8. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 10 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before serving.
