Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 cup cold milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold
  • 1 egg for egg wash

Directions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, cold milk, sugar, salt, and half of the flour. Mix until well combined.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Roll the dough into a rectangle and chill for 30 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, flatten the cold butter into a rectangle. Place the chilled dough on top of the butter and fold like a letter. Chill for another 30 minutes.
  5. Repeat the folding process two more times, chilling for 30 minutes between each fold.
  6. Roll out the dough into a rectangle and cut into triangles. Roll each triangle into a croissant shape.
  7. Place the shaped croissants on a baking sheet, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  8. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Brush the croissants with egg wash and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Serve warm and enjoy the flaky layers of these homemade American-style layered croissants.
