Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1/2 cup flour, salt, yeast, and sugar. Stir in oil and warm water. Mix in remaining flour until dough is stiff.
  2. Knead dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Place dough in an oiled bowl and turn to coat.
  3. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  4. Punch down dough and divide into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long, thin rope and braid together. Place on a greased baking sheet.
  5. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  7. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
