- For the cake:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- For the buttercream frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Green food coloring
- For the fondant details:
- Black and white fondant
- Green gel food coloring
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the granulated sugar, cocoa powder, softened butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat on low speed until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- In the meantime, prepare the buttercream frosting. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Continue to beat until light and fluffy. Add green food coloring to achieve the desired Creeper green color.
