Ingredients
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup water
- Food coloring
- Alka-Seltzer tablets
Directions
- Pour the oil and water into a clear container.
- Add several drops of food coloring to the container.
- Drop an Alka-Seltzer tablet into the container.
- Watch the mixture bubble and change colors!
Interesting Facts
- The oil and water do not mix because oil is hydrophobic (it repels water).
- The Alka-Seltzer tablets release carbon dioxide when they dissolve, which causes the mixture to bubble and the food coloring to move around.
- Lava lamps have been around since the 1960s and are still popular today.
