Lava Lamp Recipe

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup vegetable oil
• 1/2 cup water
• Food coloring
• Alka-Seltzer tablets

Directions

1. Pour the oil and water into a clear container.
2. Add several drops of food coloring to the container.
3. Drop an Alka-Seltzer tablet into the container.
4. Watch the mixture bubble and change colors!

Interesting Facts

• The oil and water do not mix because oil is hydrophobic (it repels water).
• The Alka-Seltzer tablets release carbon dioxide when they dissolve, which causes the mixture to bubble and the food coloring to move around.
• Lava lamps have been around since the 1960s and are still popular today.
